We all know that hackneyed statement and all believe we know what it means, but what does it really mean?
The inference is that we are focused on one element and therefore not seeing another more obvious one. Whilst this is of course literally true of the proclamation it goes far deeper than that. The inability to see with clarity and full focus affects us all especially when we are too close to the given situation or have an emotional bond to the item in question where perhaps there is an intangible conflict of interest.
In my experience and within any organisation this is fairly common with interdepartmental rivalry, the Sales office want the best deal they can offer for maximum profit, the Research & Development care only for more investment for future non sold product and the financial pen pushers are only focused on the bottom line of the balance sheet. Large companies have this going on 24/7 but what about the smaller independent where the boss and his small team cover all those bases whilst embroiled in the day to day running of the company as well as trying to get the best margins from their sales and marketing. That is when you sometimes cannot see the forest even if you landed slap bang in the middle of it.
It is at this time that you should consider other alternatives. Perhaps engaging with another non biased and independent opinion on your dilemma could help. A view from outside the company’s hectic business arena can sometimes see things that are glaringly obvious that those close to the coalface do not see because of their blinkered approach or a commitment to ‘always having done it like this.’
